Kung Fu Goals - Kick Procrastination Where It Counts!
By Benjamin Murane

Homework: check.
Tax return: check.
Flowers for the girlfriend: check.
Leadership Solutions article: check.

The list of Ben’s successful procrastinations continues. I used to consider myself one of the best procrastinators out there. There are few things that I can’t do last minute. In fact, I think a little pressure is healthy. It gets the blood pressure going. But I have learned the truth of goal-setting the hard way: procrastination invites itself in as your friend, won't leave, and eventually becomes master of the house.

Masters of success know about setting deadlines and goals the smart way. You know, the S-M-A-R-T way: specific, measurable, attainable and realistic, and timely.

Lamenting Scantrons
By Larinda Wenzel

Please take out a Number Two pencil. Read the directions carefully and clearly mark your answers on the bubble sheet. You will have exactly 60 minutes to complete the 60 questions on this portion of the exam. You may not write on the exam booklet and if you need scratch paper (assuming you have enough time to actually work out a problem) or need another pencil, please raise your hand and one of the test administrators will assist you. If you finish early, go back and double-check your answers. Please refrain from making designs on your scantron, and if you fall asleep, try not to snore. For those of you who find it difficult to focus under this pressure, just take your best guess and move on to the next question.

All right… so maybe I made up a few of those instructions. Regardless, I’d be willing to bet that the majority of you would agree that they should be added to the introduction paragraph that always gets read aloud before each portion of a standardized test. You could probably come up with a few more additions, yourself.

Simple Secrets to Success
By James "Skip" Lemoine

While cleaning out some old files on my computer, I ran across an article I'd completely forgotten about, one that I wrote several years ago for a few state newsletters. After giving it a read… hey, this isn't bad stuff… and most importantly, it's all still true. So, I thought, why not unearth it, dust it off a bit, and present it to the new generation of student, business, community, and healthcare leaders? Here it is, presented for the first time in four years, and still somewhat worth a read for anyone wanting to learn how to set themselves apart in the modern world.

One of the most important lessons I learned from my time spent in student organizations was knowledge of what it really, truly takes to succeed in the modern business world. By “succeed,” I don’t mean finding a decent job and sticking with it for a few years. If that's all you're looking for, you probably don't need to bother with reading the rest of this. By “succeed,” I mean getting that good job, making a real difference, impressing the right people, and working your way fairly rapidly up the corporate ladder.
